Umberto Eco finds the time to write so much because of the following reasons : (i) During his interview by Mukund, Eco tells him, "I am a professor who writes novels on ... Sundays." (ii) When Mukund repeats the question once asked by David Lodge, "I can't understand how one man can do all the things he (Eco) does" ? Eco replies, "I always do the same thing." (iii) Eco reveals that he has some philosophical interests and he pursues them through his academic work and novels. (iv) Eco says that just as the universe has empty spaces in the same way we also have a lot of empty spaces in our lives. He tells that he works in empty spaces (interstices). He further says, "Suppose, I am waiting for you (Mukund). While waiting for your elevator to come up from first to the third floor, I have already written an article". The time taken by the elevator, is an empty space for Eco.
