Significance of Spermatogenesis:

  1. Each primary spermatocyte undergoes two maturation divisions (Meiosis-I and Meiosis-II) and produces four sperms having half number of chromosomes.
  2. It is necessary to maintain the number of chromosomes constant from generation to generation.
  3. During Meiosis-I crossing over takes place which brings about variations.

Significance of Oogenesis:

  1. It produces haploid ovum.
  2. Polar bodies contain small amount of cytoplasm. It helps to retain adequate amount of cytoplasm in the ovum, which is essential for the development of early embryo.
  3. During Meiosis-I crossing over takes place which brings about variations.
